Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – Official Trailer

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Matt Reeves is taking the reins on this follow-up to Rupert Wyatt’s surprisingly strong 2010 franchise reboot, directing the previous film’s Andy Serkis as well as Judy Greer, Toby Kebbell, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Gotham – Extended Trailer

Gotham is an upcoming American television series created by Bruno Heller, based on characters appearing in and published by DC Comics, specifically those of Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne, who were created by Bob Kane, and others in DC’s Batman franchise. The series will star Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon. Heller serves as executive producer on the project along with Danny Cannon, who will also direct the pilot. Gotham received a series order from Fox on May 5, 2014, and is scheduled to premiere in the 2014–15 television season.

As originally conceived, the series would have served as a straightforward story of Gordon’s early days on the Gotham City Police force. The idea evolved not only to include the Bruce Wayne character, but will also tell the origin stories of several Batman villains, including the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, Two-Face, the Joker and Poison Ivy.

Empire of Dreams – The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy

Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy was documentary shown on AMC back in 2004. To my knowledge it’s never been released on DVD (as I’ve searched for it a number of times over the years).

This is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen on the series and apparently a decent amount of it was edited out when it’s aired on AMC. Here is the full version posted on YouTube for those that have either never had the opportunity to view it or those that want to see that extra hour that was edited out.

Penny Dreadful Trailer and Character Portraits

Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.

It sounds like a great prmise and depending on how dark they want to go could be a really twisted series. We shall see.

Eva Green as Vanessa Ives, Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler, Billie Piper as Brona Croft, and Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray.

Who Are The Guardians of the Galaxy?

Guardians 0003
Does Marvel have it’s work cut out for them with their newest movie this summer? Considering that none of the Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) are exactly household names, you’d think it would be tough to get the average moviegoer in the theater for this film. Honestly, I don’t think Marvel is looking at that hard a task. When Marvel started producing their own movies with Iron Man, he wasn’t exactly all that well known to anyone outside of the comic book community. Marvel made sure to get everyone’s attention by taking a risk (at the time) in hiring Robert Downey Jr. to play the title character. Looking back now, it seems like a no-brainer, but a the time it was considered a risk. From there Marvel has done a great job of adding the pieces to their universe and getting the fans behind each piece.

Here’s a little spoiler-ish history of the team:

The GotG have been around for some time in the comics and in the last few years have seen a reassurance in their popularity. Marvel basically let creators Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning run wild with the cosmic portion of the Marvel Universe. The two of them took what could be considered a very confusing assemblage of characters and made it into a cohesive narrative. Their sprawling space epics have included characters from every part of the Marvel Universe, which could easily tie into any part of what Marvel wants to do in the future with their films. A few of the epic stories: Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, The War of Kings and The Thanos Imperative. The list of characters included in these story-lines have ties with almost every major team in the Marvel Universe, so it leaves a lot of wiggle room for how Marvel wants to proceed with the next phase of their movie projects. Beginning with the five main members of the team:

Drax the Destoryer:
Drax 001
Drax 002

Drax 003

Gamora:

Groot 0003

Star Lord:

Besides the main team, a number of other Marvel characters are going to be in the film, while others might be included in a few Easter Eggs spread throughout the film (as the GotG have ties to so many of them) to make all the fanboys happy:

Ronan the Accuser, The Nova Corps, Thanos, Galactus, Ultron, Annihilus, The Phalanx, The Kree, The Skrulls, The Shi’ar, The Starjammers ,The Imperial Guard, Mantis, Quasar, Adam Warlock, Bug, Moondragon, Blastaar, Kang, Yondu, The Collector, Yondu, Nebula, Black Bolt, The Inhumans, Vulcan and The Silver Surfer.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer

GotG 0001

Here is the first official trailer for Marvel Comics upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy feature film.

I’m on the fence with this one. I like the Guardians (would have loved Bug to be included…maybe in a sequel), but they really aren’t a super hero team in the traditional sense. It would seem the easy way to go is market this as a science fiction adventure, but at least one character has ties to Marvel Universe character we’ve already seen (no spoilers here) and you’d have to think Marvel is going to look to tie GotG in with the Avengers franchise at some point.

GotG 0004

GotG 0003

Overall the trailer did a pretty good job of introducing the GotG, but I think it was a little too comical. John C. Reilly is a great actor, but I tend to think of him playing comedic roles, so having him in the majority of the trailer didn’t give me a feel that this movie is either a super hero film or a space adventure. I have no idea how much of a role he’ll have in the film, but it just seemed odd that he was such a focal point of the trailer. Add in the “Hooked on a Feeling” as the main song in the trailer and it just didn’t feel like Marvel’s best effort with the first official trailer.

Oh…I’m still getting on line opening day (08-01-14) to see this film! It just seems to have lacked something for the first introduction to the mass movie audience that doesn’t know anything about these characters.
